A Family Day at Laguna Esmeralda

Laguna Esmeralda

Before setting out, we had a talk with our guide to choose the best option for us. I was traveling with my partner and our two teenage kids, and we wanted something that combined nature, a bit of adventure, and the chance to enjoy it at our own pace. The guide explained all the alternatives—National Park with the End of the World Train, lakes, glaciers, a city tour… all tempting. But when he mentioned Laguna Esmeralda, we knew it was the one: a medium-difficulty hike, perfect for the kids, crowned with an outdoor lunch in the mountains.

The day started early, with a private pickup. From the very beginning, we realized this wasn’t a conventional guide: not only did he drive, he also cooked and accompanied us the entire way. As we drove into the valley, he shared stories about the geography and history of the region, while the kids fired away with questions.

The hike was just right—not too hard, but challenging enough to make us feel the excitement of crossing lenga forests, streams, and open valleys. When the emerald-green lagoon finally appeared, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, we all agreed it was worth every step.

While we soaked in the view, the guide lit a fire and cooked a steaming lentil stew, perfect for the crisp mountain air. Eating that homemade dish in such a wild, breathtaking setting was unforgettable. Even our teens—usually hard to impress—admitted it was one of the highlights of the trip.

By the end of the day, tired but happy, we realized this wasn’t just another excursion. It was a tailor-made family experience, blending nature, adventure, and local flavors into memories we’ll always carry with us.
